Snoop Dogg will host the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, completing a 32-year journey from headline-making young performer to the person responsible for leading the entire broadcast.
CBS and MTV confirmed that the rapper will host the ceremony live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27. Snoop will also serve as an executive producer, giving him a creative role behind the production as well as its most visible position onstage.
The booking feels especially appropriate because the VMAs are returning to Los Angeles for the first time since 2017. Few performers are more closely identified with West Coast hip-hop—or have a longer history with MTV—than the Long Beach-raised artist.
Snoop Dogg’s VMA History Began in 1994
Snoop made his VMA main-stage debut in 1994, less than a year after the release of his first album, Doggystyle.
He performed “Murder Was the Case” in a theatrical production built around an open coffin, religious imagery and dancers dressed as mourners. A contemporary account in The New Yorker described the performance’s elaborate rehearsal and the internal debate over placing the provocative young rapper so prominently on MTV.
The appearance came during a period when hip-hop was still fighting for recognition across mainstream television and radio. MTV’s national reach helped place Snoop and other rap artists directly in front of the network’s youth audience.
Three decades later, the performer whose inclusion once prompted concern inside the network will be trusted to guide one of MTV’s biggest live events.
“MTV and the VMAs have been part of my story since the beginning,” Snoop said in the official announcement.
He Became a Recurring Part of VMA History
Snoop’s connection to the ceremony did not end with his debut.
In 1999, he helped close the VMAs alongside Dr. Dre and Eminem. He returned in 2005 for a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G., then reunited with Eminem for a 2022 performance inspired by the Otherside metaverse.
Those appearances trace several different phases of both his career and MTV’s evolution—from the height of music television to an era shaped by digital animation, virtual worlds and social media.
Snoop has received 13 VMA nominations and won three awards. His relationship with MTV also extended beyond the ceremony through programs including the sketch-comedy series Doggy Fizzle Televizzle and the variety show Dogg After Dark.
Hosting represents a different level of responsibility. Instead of appearing for one performance or presenting a category, he will have to connect the broadcast’s awards, musical numbers and unscripted moments.
He will do so alongside veteran MTV executive and producer Van Toffler, whom Snoop specifically mentioned when discussing the significance of his return. Their shared history reaches back to an era when MTV was becoming one of hip-hop’s most influential mainstream platforms.
Why Snoop Dogg Is a Logical VMAs Host
Snoop’s career has expanded far beyond recording and performing.
He has become a familiar television personality, sports commentator, entrepreneur and live-event presence. His relaxed delivery and ability to work with performers from different generations make him a natural fit for an awards show that combines established icons with emerging artists.
His 2022 Super Bowl halftime performance with Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar also demonstrated how effectively he can represent West Coast hip-hop inside a major mainstream television event.
The VMAs have traditionally benefited from hosts who can react to unpredictable moments without making the ceremony feel overly controlled. Snoop’s conversational style should allow him to move between prepared material and spontaneous crowd interactions.
However, MTV has not announced whether he will also deliver a musical performance. His confirmed roles are host and executive producer.
What Is Confirmed for the 2026 VMAs
The ceremony will air from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS, with a simultaneous MTV broadcast and live streaming for Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the United States. It will become available internationally through MTV and Paramount+ the following day.
Madonna will open the ceremony with her first VMA performance in 23 years. Additional performers announced by CBS and MTV include RAYE, LISA, Shaboozey, Sienna Spiro, Gunna, GENER8ION and Yung Lean.
Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award, creating another connection to the period when Snoop first became an MTV fixture. Madonna leads the nominations with 11, followed by Taylor Swift with nine and Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter with seven each.
The complete presenter list and the order of awards have not been disclosed.
The Host Announcement Reflects How MTV—and Snoop—Changed
The full-circle element is not simply that Snoop is returning to a familiar stage.
In 1994, he represented a confrontational new sound that MTV was still learning how to present to a mass audience. In 2026, he is an established cross-generational entertainer being asked to shape the network’s signature awards show.
MTV has changed as well. The VMAs now extend across CBS and Paramount+, reflecting a media landscape in which the original cable channel is only one part of the audience strategy.
Snoop’s appointment connects those two eras. He carries the history of the show’s 1990s relationship with hip-hop while possessing the mainstream recognition needed to lead a modern multiplatform broadcast.
“To come back now and host the VMAs, all these years later, that’s a full-circle moment for me,” he said.
For once, the familiar awards-show phrase is difficult to dispute.
