Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has officially reached the top of the North American box-office chart.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an estimated $915,000 on Tuesday, September 15, taking its domestic total to $936,773,123 after 47 days in theaters. That moved it past the $936,662,225 lifetime total of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had held the unadjusted domestic record since 2016.
The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster is now the highest-grossing movie in the United States and Canada when ticket sales are measured in nominal dollars. The record will continue growing for as long as the film remains in theaters.
The next—and far more difficult—milestone is $1 billion domestically.
Spider-Man Passed Star Wars by Approximately $111,000
Tuesday’s earnings placed Brand New Day approximately $110,898 ahead of The Force Awakens, according to the latest figures from The Numbers.
The margin is narrow, but there is no danger of Spider-Man immediately losing the position. The Force Awakens is no longer in regular theatrical release, while Brand New Day continues to play in more than 3,000 North American theaters.
Sony confirmed the new record on September 16. The film’s official social-media account thanked fans for helping it make “cinematic history.”
The achievement arrived even though Practical Magic 2 ended Spider-Man’s six-week run at No. 1 during the September 11–13 weekend. Holland’s film no longer needed to lead the weekly chart; it needed only enough continuing ticket sales to close the remaining gap.
Brand New Day Has Been Breaking Records Since July
Brand New Day opened on July 31 and immediately established the largest domestic opening weekend in box-office history.
It earned $360.1 million across its first three days, surpassing the $357.1 million opening of Avengers: Endgame. Its opening included a record $72 million from Thursday previews.
The film subsequently became the fastest release to cross every major domestic threshold from $400 million through $900 million, according to Boxoffice Pro. It also remained No. 1 for six consecutive weekends.
International audiences have contributed more than $1.5 billion, giving the movie a worldwide total of approximately $2.45 billion. That places it third on the unadjusted global chart, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
The movie also helped drive the combined North American summer box office to a record $4.76 billion.
Why Tom Holland’s Fourth Spider-Man Became So Large
Brand New Day is Holland’s fourth solo film as Peter Parker, following Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. Its record extends a progression that saw each installment significantly increase the commercial reach of his version of the character.
The new film begins after the world has forgotten Peter Parker’s identity. With his relationships erased, Peter concentrates on working as Spider-Man full time before a physical transformation and a new threat disrupt his isolated life.
Holland’s performance is central to the film, but the record cannot be attributed to one actor alone. Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo are among the supporting cast.
Destin Daniel Cretton directed from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal again connected Sony’s Spider-Man franchise to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The combination of an established character, the unresolved ending of No Way Home, an unusually large marketing campaign and demand for premium theatrical formats gave the release an enormous starting point. Positive audience response then allowed it to continue generating substantial revenue beyond its opening weekend.
The Record Is Not Adjusted for Inflation
The “highest-grossing domestic movie” distinction needs an important qualification: it measures revenue in the dollars collected at the time each ticket was sold.
It does not adjust for inflation, changing ticket prices or the number of admissions.
Older films sold tickets at much lower prices and often returned to theaters through multiple rereleases. When estimated ticket sales and inflation are considered, Gone with the Wind remains far ahead of modern blockbusters. It is estimated to have sold more than 200 million domestic tickets, according to an analysis based on Box Office Mojo’s inflation-adjusted data.
Brand New Day has therefore generated more nominal domestic ticket revenue than any previous movie. It has not necessarily attracted the largest audience in North American film history.
The same unadjusted-dollar measurement was used when The Force Awakens passed Avatar, and it is the standard ranking most commonly cited by studios and box-office tracking services.
Can Spider-Man Become the First $1 Billion Domestic Movie?
After Tuesday, Brand New Day needed approximately $63.23 million more to reach $1 billion in the United States and Canada.
That is possible mathematically, but the current theatrical trend makes it a considerably harder goal than breaking the existing record.
Daily revenue has fallen below $1 million on weekdays, and the movie earned about $8.4 million during its seventh weekend. It will also continue losing theaters as new films open.
The Numbers previously projected a final domestic total of approximately $985 million. Sony could improve the film’s chances by keeping it in theaters through the fall or mounting a later rerelease, but the studio has not announced a special campaign designed to reach $1 billion.
Based on its present pace, finishing above The Force Awakens but below $1 billion appears more likely. That assessment could change if the movie develops unusually strong late-run staying power.
The question in the original headline has nevertheless been answered. Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man movie did not merely close in on the domestic record—it broke it in 47 days and established a new target for every future blockbuster.
